Arab Women Organization, The Arab Network for Civic Education-ANHRE, and ACTED hold a third panel discussion on the project "Increasing the participation of local Jordanian civil society organizations in the humanitarian response to the Syrian crisis

Arab Women Organization, Arab Network for Civic Education (ANHRE) and ACTED organized a panel discussion on "Increasing the Participation of Jordanian Local Civil Society Organizations in the Humanitarian Response to the Syrian Crisis through Gender-Based Planning", funded by the Women's Fund for Peace and Humanity, on Monday, 12/2018 at the Geneva-Amman Hotel, the third event in a series of five mobilization events within the project "Increasing the participation of local Jordanian civil society organizations in the humanitarian response to the Syrian crisis through gender-based planning".

 

The aim of this event was to contribute to improving the performance of community organizations, the participation of women and young people in responding to the Syrian crisis, as well as, enhancing their roles in communicating positive messages relevant to their communities. It also aimed to share lessons learned and success stories during the planning and implementation of gender-sensitive community-based initiatives in the livelihoods, women's economic empowerment, social protection, sexual and reproductive health.

 

After the opening session, Women's Working Society, Tafila Charitable Society, and Bushra Centre for Studies and Research reviewed the lessons learned and success stories of the initiatives they are currently implementing. The initiative aims to improve the living conditions of Syrian women in the targeted areas by contributing to the reduction of gender-based violence. The association's liaison officer, Suhaila Al-Sawalqa said that the initiative includes several activities, the most important of which are field visits to Syrian women for prevention services centres of gender-based violence, With the aim of raising their awareness and informing them of the legal and psychological support centres that they must resort to if they or their relatives are subjected to violence. On the other hand, Ms. Jehan Morjan, director of the Bushra Centre for Studies and Research, said that the selection of the initiative sector, which focuses on improving the access of Syrian women and their awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights services, which was followed by the collection of information and data from targeted areas in Zarqa Governorate, where it was found that Syrian refugees lack knowledge and practices regarding sexual and reproductive health and services because of the sensitivity of the subject and the lack of priority from community organizations and society as a whole. In addition, Rawan Sabah, Liaison Officer of the Arab Women's Organization Rawan Sabah, pointed out that the association's initiative aimed at empowering women with the skill of marketing products manufactured at home. Through the activities of the initiative, we managed to connect women with public sector owners and with the municipality. Bazaar dates are held periodically to ensure their participation.

 

It is worth mentioning that the project "Increasing the Participation of Local Jordanian Civil Society Organizations in the Humanitarian Response to the Syrian Crisis through Gender-Based Planning" is being implemented in partnership with the Arab Women's Organization, Arab Network for Civic Education-ANHRE and ACTED, funded by the Women's Peace and Human Fund in five governorates. Kingdom (Zarqa, East Amman, Irbid, Mafraq and Al-Tafila). The project, which runs from November 2017 until the end of January 2019, aims to build the capacities and knowledge of local associations to integrate women and youth into their plans and programs in the context of the Syrian crisis and build their capacity to collect and analyse data based on gender sensitive evidence to influence decision-making more effectively.

 

The Women's Fund for Peace and Humanity is the only global funding mechanism exclusively dedicated to supporting women's participation in peace-building and humanitarian action. The Women's Fund is a flexible and fast funding tool that supports specific qualitative interventions to strengthen the capacity of local women to anticipate conflicts, respond to crises and emergencies and capture key peace-building opportunities. The Fund is an innovative partnership between Member States, the United Nations and civil society, representing all concerned parties in its Global Finance Council. The United Nations Women's Fund provides support to the Fund as a Secretariat and ensures coordination for the implementation of the decisions of the Financing Board.

 

Donors of the fund currently include Australia, Canada, Ireland, Spain, United Kingdom, Liechtenstein and Lithuania.
