2015-06-01

Arab Network for Civic Education (ANHRE) is a partner in a two year project (2013-2014) with Arab Women Organization of Jordan (AWO),  European Feminist Initiative IFE-EFI and Solidaridad Internacional (SI) entitled “In search of commitments towards political reform and commitment towards women´s rights” funded by the EU.

The Overall Objective of the project is to enhancing democracy by strengthening women’s participation in politics. Specifically it aims to 1) Build necessary skills at the community level to contribute to greater respect for human rights and democratic citizenship; 2) Empower CBOs to directly involve women in the electoral reform; 3) Strengthen linkages between women in the elected assemblies and in the political parties at the local and national levels and the civil society to promote women’s rights.

The project will issue a common agenda to promote women’s rights to facilitate cooperation between State and Non-State Actors and to be adopted by women MPs, women politicians and women activists and the civil society. The common agenda should identify the problems facing the implementation of women’s rights and assess the impact of women participation in Parliament.

Anhre had conducted citizenship project to Mosawa focal points who held local training to women. In addition a roundtable had been conducted on 9th of June 2014 to contribute to the promotion of women’s political participation in Jordan. The roundtable came up with a draft agenda for women that should be revised and published at the end of the project.

The roundtable was attended by 30 participants from different background: Members of the Parliament, women’s rights CSOs, political parties, academics, media and State institutions, who came together to examine challenges and opportunities and share experiences and good practices in order to contribute to the building of a common women´s rights agenda for women in politics through:

•Identification and preparation of a joint analysis of the reasons and challenges/constraints for women with feminist agenda to access the political sphere.

•Exchange of experiences and best practices to overcome those challenges.

•Draft initial recommendations to prepare a “Common Agenda” and to overcome the challenges identified in Jordan.

Furthermore, The National Conference "Towards Full Participation for Women in The Political Life" was held during the period 28-29 October 2014, that came as a complementary step for a past round-table meeting held in June 2014 to discuss challenges, opportunities, mechanism and actual actions to promote women's political participation.

The conference aimed at enriching the discussion on the need to launch a community debate to promote women's participation in the political decision in order to become an essential element in the democratic reform process and to reach a common agenda to promote women's political participation. The conference also provided opportunities to exchange experiences with political activists and representatives of women's organizations in the Euro Mediterranean region.
