Global Campaign for Education 2009

The 2009 Global Action Week focused on adult literacy and life-long learning.The week gained the attention of millions of campaigners of all ages around the world – and over 14 million people took part in reading stories and adding their names to the Big Read.

 

The Big Read brought the support of many authors and big names for education and literacy for all. Arab Network for Human Rights and Citizenship Education-ANHRE participated for the first time at a high regional level in the GCE-Global Campaign for Education Action Week during the period 20-26/4/2009. ANHRE, through its regional members, implemented a number of activities and events in Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Morocco, Yemen, Iraq, Sudan and Egypt.

 

ANHRE concluded the events of the Global Campaign action week, which was ANHRE’s first campaign in the MENA region that takes place between 20-26th of April every year. Different Educational institutes, charity associations, civil Society, women’s associations and schools, conducted several events, celebrities, workshops entitled “Adults Read and Lifelong Learning”, and the slogan of the year was “Open Books Open Doors”. The activities focused on reminding the decision makers and governments of their commitments especially against Dakar’s agreement of the year 2000 which coincides with the same date of the Global Action Week. 


ANHRE members in the 8 participating countries contributed to establishment of the independent educational coalitions in their countries to advocate for education for all objectives. In Jordan, the activities and events were conducted all over Jordan; in the capital city of Amman, Irbid, Zarqa, Karak and Ma’an. ANHRE in cooperation with around 25 organizations in Jordan took part in the 2009 action week and initiated the work of the Jordan coalition for education for all. 

 

ANHRE launched the Campaign with a big celebration in cooperation with Al-Ahleyyah Amman University on April 22 2009. Many civil society representatives attended the event besides the representative of the Ministry of Education and three parliamentarians who participated in the launching event. The campaign gave the chance to people with disability to participate, emphasizing the right of education for all. Two workshops were conducted in Amman and in Karak focusing on the concept of illiteracy and its new forms as electronic Illiteracy, cultural illiteracy and lack of communication skills. Furthermore, a model class activity was conducted in Zarqa city in cooperation with the Comprehensive Secondary School. In addition, a conference was held in Ma’an.
