Our Story

In 2005 non-governmental, non-profit organizations gathered in order to establish a network to meet the need of a forum comprising all institutions and organizations working in the field of Human Rights Education and Citizenship in the Arab World. The general assembly comprises 53 member organizations from 10 countries: Iraq, Yemen, Morocco, Egypt, Sudan, Jordan, Lebanon, Tunisia, Palestine and Algeria. The Coordination Committee and the Executive office runs the network, which we call "Arab Network for Civic Education", from Amman in Jordan.

 

In order to create this coordination body through a transparent and democratic process, these organizations elected the first coordination committee in 2008 formed of 7 members to declare officially the establishment of this body. In the first meeting of the Coordination Committee that took place in Beirut during the period of November 9-11 2008, the Founding Statement was declared after consultation with all members as follows:

 

"The founding coordination committee announces on behalf of its members the establishment of the Arab Network for Human Rights and Citizenship Education (ANHRE); An independent, non-governmental, Arab regional network works to unify and coordinate efforts among different civil societies concerned with Human Rights and Citizenship Education, to influence the policies, procedures, formal and non-formal regulations in order to ensure the adoption of legislations that respect Human Rights and dignity. The network seeks to achieve its vision of adoption of policies and legislations that ensure the promotion and enforcement of Human Rights and citizenship values and culture, towards a society in which social justice prevails."

 

The new name of The Arab Network for Human Rights and Citizenship Education "ANHRE" has changed to "The Arab Network for Civic Education" which also implies Human Rights.
