"Empowering Women for Leadership” 2017

The Arab Network for Civil Education-ANHRE launches "Empowering Women for Leadership” project in in partnership with HIVOS International and supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. The project aims at empowering local women mobilizers in 9 governorates in Jordan to take and influence informed decisions and responsible gender equality actions to impact political and societal development, opinion, practices and recognition. The targeted governorates are: Karak in the south, Zarqa, Madaba, Balqa in the middle, Irbid, Jerash and Ajloun in the north.

 

The two-year project, from October 2017 to September 2019, also aims Set up of an active network of local women mobilizers and CBOs aware of the gender context, the socio-cultural norms and traditions related to women’s rights and participation and women’s knowledge and capacities required to increase their opportunities to get engaged in public life and decision-making for integrating gender equality to impact political and societal development and opinions; and this local network of CBOs and women take practical community actions and mobilize other women to be involved in the public decision and increased gender sensitive local plans and agendas, perception and opinions.

 

In the same context, ANHRE conducted ToT workshop at Geneva Amman Hotel from 7-10 January 2018 for 18 women leaders from the targeted governorates. The workshop aimed at providing the 18 women leaders with the necessary knowledge to promote the concepts of advocacy and gender equality and develop the skills of women leaders, advocacy and identifying gender priorities. Participants in the workshop are expected to transfer their knowledge for 40 women in each governorate through two-day training sessions of up to 360 women participants. Women participants are expected to launch 56 community-based activities aimed at facilitating networking, advocacy on key messages determined through project activities

 

Fottouh Younis, Executive Director of ANHRE, said that this project will contribute to empowering women and providing them with the knowledge, skills and tactics necessary to overcome the challenges facing their leadership role and their political and civic participation. The challenges that are facing the women will be addressed by focusing on three components: their knowledge of discriminatory laws and governance structures, cultural norms and practices, women's knowledge and abilities. Younes added that the project will focus on the role of women gender equality in political and social development at the local level taking into account the role of women and local organizations in local decision-making mechanisms. Work will be done with women activists at the local level to increase their awareness of gender-sensitive context analysis and assess their advocacy capacity for gender equality in the local plans of the target regions and to advocate for the needs of women in these plans. Anhar network and its partners in the nine target governorates will work to move the dialogue to a broad national level.

 

HIVOS representative in Jordan said that the ANHRE network was selected for the partnership in the implementation of the "Empowerment of Women for Leadership" which is implemented by the organization for 5 years in partnership with a number of national organizations in Jordan, including the ANHRE network. The partnership with ANHRE aims at achieving number of objectives identified for the project as a whole that are women’s CSOs and established and aspiring women leaders collaborate and impact political and societal development and opinions; the general public increasingly recognizes and supports women in leadership positions; Civic organizations demonstrate a significant change in their policies and practices on full and equal participation of women in leadership positions. She added that Hivos was founded in 1968inspired by humanist values. Our founders held the conviction that development work should not be linked to missionary work, and true cooperation presumes respect for differing beliefs. These convictions are still reflected in our work.
